I’m so excited to share today’s project which features the Lovely As A Tree Stamp Set and a brand NEW Technique I call the Black Ice technique.
This super fun technique was something I developed in collaboration with my, creative, amazing, 89-year-old mom when she was visiting at Christmas time. This card has inspired so many fun variations and I can’t wait to share. In fact, I’m sharing a Black Ice technique project with my clubs in January and with my NEW Online Stamp Club in February! You’ll find more club related details ahead just in case you’re interested. So on to today’s project…
Check out this card! I just love it and hope you do too!

The focal piece was actually one of our “reject” pieces as it doesn’t really show the true Black Ice technique in it’s best form, but it’s still pretty darn beautiful if you ask me.
A silver foil sheet was used both for the background and the focal piece. The steps are quite easy and simple. Here are the basic steps:
- Use the direct to paper technique with a Black Archival ink pad, on a piece of silver foil to create black linear streaks.
- Stamp images in Black Archival ink as desired and dry using a heat tool.
- Use the direct to paper technique with a Versamark pad, on the silver foil to create invisible linear streaks. A very light touch is crucial here to get the best result.
- With a spoon, pour Clear Stampin’ Emboss Powder over the the silver foil, tap off the excess and heat with a heat tool to melt the embossing powder.
If you look at the background piece in this next photo you’ll see what I consider to be the “true” black ice technique look. It actually looks like little icy droplets in broken lines. It is so pretty in person!

You can see the “Black Ice” even better in this next photo.

I hope you enjoyed todays project and will check back soon to see more fun variations on this technique. Early in February I will be sharing a video tutorial featuring this technique.
This video tutorial will show the project being made by my in-person and online clubs. Club members will get project kits in the mail plus a PDF with other helpful information plus hostess benefits once during the club cycle. To learn more about my NEW Online Stamp Club you’ll find the details ahead.

Since the initial writing of this post the Black Archival stamp pad retired from the Stampin’ Up! catalog. The Jet Black StazOn ink pad is a perfect alternative. When using the StazOn pad, it’s important to note that if it is brand new and very juicy you may get more black than desired when doing this technique. If that is the case, simply remove some of the ink from the ink pad by rubbing on your scrap paper or dab with a paper towel before using.
