DIY Valentine Cards and Sneak Peeks

For today’s post, I’ve created some DIY Valentine Cards. These are sneak peeks of the January 2021 Simple Suite Stampers Tutorial Bundle.

At the beginning of each month, the Simple Suite Stampers design team publishes a tutorial bundle focusing on a particular theme. The focus this month is the Love You Always product suite and other Valentine-themed products in the new mini catalog. My DIY Valentine Cards feature the Valentine Keepsakes Stamp Set which is an adorable new set in the Stampin’ Up! January to June 2021 mini catalog. I’ll be showing you the project I designed for the tutorial bundle plus a redo of the design made by Sandra Hernandez.

The first of my two DIY Valentine Cards is a redo of, design team member, Sandra Hernandez’s card.

Sandra used an adorable set called Hearts & Kisses for her card but since I did not have that set, I made my versions with the Valentine Keepsakes Stamp Set. To see her super cute card watch my video at the end of this post. The card you see below was my first redo. It’s definitely a different, busier look than Sandra’s card but I think it’s pretty cute!

I started by stamping my “heart garden” image in Real Red ink on my focal piece and on a scrap piece of white card stock. The one on the focal piece was really just for positioning purposes so I’d know where to stamp all the other images in black around it. I then cleaned my stamp and stamped this same image to create a bit of a pattern, as Sandra had done on her card. Then the flower images were stamped in first, second, and third ink to fill in the white spaces.

The second Real Red image was fussy cut using Paper Snips, my favorite scissors for fine detail cutting! I then attached it to my focal piece with Dimensionals and added some Wink of Stella to each heart shape.

The designer paper in the background is from the True Love designer paper pack which is full of simple and elegant black and white flowers and patterns. These dots provided a perfect, simple backdrop for my focal piece.

For my Facebook Live I made a simplified version of the focal piece for this card.

Here’s the card I made during the live event:

Some details about the sentiment piece worth noting:

Since the sentiment piece is white on white card stock, it may not be obvious, but the sentiment is actually punched out using the Lovely Labels Pick A Punch. Make sure to watch my video at the end of this post for tips to create this sentiment piece with this punch.

Also, on both versions of my card, in addition to using Wink of Stella on the hearts, I’ve used it on the “Sending” portion of my sentiment. On this one, I also made the sentiment piece a little longer so I could add a few of these adorable red Resin Hearts. Wink of Stella was also added onto the top portion of these Resin Hearts.

By the way, while there are some very cute sentiments in the Valentine Keepsakes Stamp Set, the sentiment used on this card is from the Framed For You Stamp Set. I just love the “Sending Love & Hugs” sentiment. To me, it’s super versatile because I can see sending a card with this sentiment to almost anyone!

So, here’s my pair of cards. Which do you prefer?

This next card was my contribution to this month’s tutorial bundle.

Again, I made two versions of this card, with one using stamped card stock pieces and the other was made with the gorgeous Love You Always Specialty Designer Paper.

For this first one, I simply stamped images from the Valentine Keepsakes Stamp Set onto scraps of Rococo Rose, Blushing Bride, and Sahara Sand card stock. I then punched them out using the Tailored Tags punch and arranged them to make a pattern of colors, starting with the placement of my sentiment piece.

The sentiment piece is created with white card stock and raised up on Dimensionals, so it would stand out against the background of shapes and patterns. I stamped the sentiment first, then stamped the heart image in first, second and third ink and last the flowers were stamped to frame the sentiment and tie it all together.

For a little added interest, I put some Wink of Stella on my darkest heart and on the flowers. Plus, a Heart Charm was attached over the lightest heart and one small Matte Black Dot was placed in the lower left-hand corner.

The second version of this card was made with the Love You Always Specialty Designer Paper and the Love You Always Foil Sheets.

This specialty paper is simply gorgeous and so I couldn’t help but try out this card layout with these papers. I used the same basic pattern as for the first version of my card but I did switch the placement of the Rococo Rose and Blushing Bride pieces.

If you decide to make one of these cards using the pattern I did, you’ll need…

4 punched pieces of one pattern, 3 punched pieces of a second pattern, 2 punched pieces in a third pattern, and 1 piece in a coordinating solid color for the sentiment piece. It might not seem like enough but as you’ll find if you make one of these that you’ll have some scrap pieces when you’re putting this together that make it all work out.

The photo below shows the pieces I intended to use for my second card but in the end, I mixed up my colors a bit, as you’ll see if you watch my Facebook Live video at the end of this post. I basically switched around the placement of the two different pinks. So for my finished card, I ended up using 4 Rococo Rose and 3 Blushing Bride punched pieces instead of what you see below.

For my sentiment piece, I used some of the Sahara Sand foil card stock. Jet Black StazOn was used for the stamping on the foil since it’s a non-porous surface. I did the stamping in exactly the same way as on the first card.

When stamping my hearts, I was being careful not to press too hard so my image wouldn’t slide on the foil, and what I ended up with was a bit of a “hole” in my image. I actually like the look!

By the way, I also attempted to add Wink of Stella to my foil but it didn’t actually show up.

Here are my two finished cards side by side:

This card layout would work with so many different designer papers and be simply gorgeous!

It makes me want to play, play, play, just thinking about it! Also, to make this card simpler, and less busy, you could use the same patterned paper for all the punched pieces (except for the sentiment piece).

I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing my DIY Valentine Cards and that you’re inspired to play!
