Today’s project with the Black Ice technique is a little like embossing art to me!
The images from the Rooted in Nature stamp set are so gorgeous, to begin with, but they are just simply stunning, paired with the silver foil and heat embossing.
This technique was something my mom and I discovered together when playing with some stamping designs. The name was chosen because if you look closely at the final result, the heat embossing looks like linear droplets of ice streaked across the surface, and it made me think of what real black ice might look like if you saw it close up.
Since the foil is shiny it’s difficult to capture how beautiful this is, but hopefully, you’ll get the idea and be inspired to try your own embossing art project.
I’ve included some close-up photos here to help you see and appreciate the effect. Can you see the linear droplets in this photo? I hope so!

There is a large and small leaf which are both very detailed, delicate images. Both of these images are stamped in full ink. The third image includes multiple very small leaves and yet it is bolder. As a result, it was stamped mostly in second and third ink so it wouldn’t overpower the other more delicate images.
The process for doing the black ice technique is actually quite simple, but there is also some nuance to the technique, and tips you’ll want to know before doing it. Check out my video tutorial just ahead for all the details!
