February 2020 Color Challenge

My February 2020 Color Challenge & Blog Hop project features the Happy Birthday To You Stamp Set. It's FREE with qualifying orders during Sale-A-Bration!

Welcome to the Color Fusers Blog Hop and February 2020 Color Challenge!

The color scheme for the February 2020 Color Challenge is Blushing Bride, Very Vanilla, Sahara Sand and Early Espresso. Now I initially thought this was going to be a difficult color scheme for me but this card actually came together pretty easily.

I’ve used a bunch of fun products on this card but the featured products are the Happy Birthday To You Stamp Set and coordinating Birthday Dies. This stamp set is available as a Free item with a qualifying order during Sale-A-Bration and now has this coordinating set of dies too! The dies are available to purchase starting on February 4th but are only available while supplies last!

I have 4 super cool tips and tricks to share today!

Tips and Tricks You’ll find in this post:

  • How to add paper piecing to your project
  • How to create a shorter rectangle using a rectangle die
  • Five ways to use the Sahara Sand Woven Trim
  • An easy way to get a little dimension when you don’t want the full height of a dimensional

To start with I heat embossed my image using black embossing powder and used an Aqua Painter to color in the image. So, truth be told, I colored the “plate” by accident in Early Espresso Ink and needed to fix my boo-boo. Can you see how the cake plate doesn’t have a very vanilla edge and is a deeper shade of Sahara Sand? Well… to fix my mistake I used the Paper Piecing method to create my cake base.

What is Paper Piecing you might ask?

So paper piecing can be used for all kinds of fun effects but on my project, I simply needed to cover the cake stand. I also like how it makes that part of the image stand out from the cake portion of the image.

So here’s how I created the cake plate using the Paper Piecing method:

I then used the cake die you see in the photo below to cut out the image. These Birthday dies are part of a limited-time offering that becomes available starting 2/4/20 and they’re only available while supplies last!

Before I decided to do the paper piecing I actually tried to cover up the Early Espresso on the cake plate using a white gel pen and then coloring over it with Sahara Sand ink. The white gel did not absorb the color and so it looked pretty bad. I pretty much had to do my paper piecing to save my focal piece. 🙂

The rectangle die used on this card comes from the NEW Nature’s Thoughts Dies which coordinate with the Positive Thoughts Stamp Set in the mini-catalog.

This is one of my favorite sets in the new mini-catalog, so I just had to have the coordinating dies! I also love the rectangle die because it has a simple but elegant border. That said the length of the die was a little too long for my card so I needed to come up with a way to shorten it because I really wanted to use it!

These dies are available now for demonstrators to order but customers will be able to order them starting tomorrow 2/4/20.

Don’t you agree that this rectangle die goes perfectly with the background created with the Stitched Lace Die?

Can you also see how the bottom of the Stitched Lace Die is raised up ever so slightly?

This brings me to Trick #3!

I used multipurpose liquid glue on the top and sides of this die-cut lace piece because in those spots I wanted it to be flush with it’s backing. At the bottom, I wanted the pretty lace edge to show a bit more so I raised it up using my rolled up glue dots.

In this next close up photo, you can see that I’ve added a little bling to my project with some Wink of Stella on the flowers and some colored rhinestone jewels.

Now the leaves were colored with Sahara Sand ink and as you can see they have a slightly green hue to them which I love! As a result, I decided to color my rhinestones so they would also have a slightly green hue. I did not have the Sahara Sand Blends alcohol marker so I used my light Mossy Meadow Blends alcohol marker instead, and it did the trick!

Lasts but not least, I played around with the Sahara Sand Woven Trim to add a little texture to the bottom of my focal element.

I actually tried 5 ways to use this ribbon and in the end settled on the simplest, and 5th variation that you see above. In this version, I used the thread that you pull out when you create some of the other variations.

This graphic shows 3 of the 5 ways to use this ribbon:

If you cut off the full length of the tassels, from variation #3 above, you get a 4th way to use this ribbon as you can see here:

It was so fun playing with all these different ways to use this ribbon so I just had to share what I learned!

So… I used a bunch of awesome products on this card. Here are some of what I used but you’ll find a complete supply list at the end of this post too!
