In today’s post, you’ll see several projects made with the Die Cut Masking Technique.
Die Cut Masking is super easy. Plus, there are tons of creative possibilities with this technique. For today’s projects, I’ve used the Brilliant Wings dies to create my mask. On some of the projects, I’ve also used the amazing Naturally Gilded Specialty Designer Paper.
Each year on my Stampin’ Up! anniversary one of my favorite things to do is pull out a project made earlier in my time as a demonstrator, and remake it with current Stampin’ Up! products. I call this a “Rewind/Redo” project. In this post, you’ll see my old “rewind” project and new “redo” projects. My projects today were inspired by a fall-themed card made back in 2016. I absolutely love this original card so decided to include it in my month-long series of “Rewind/Redo” projects.

For each of these die cut masking cards I’ve used a mask created using the Brilliant Wings dies.
Using the mask I added color to the openings and then stamped some images in the openings as well. Here’s the first redo card I made using this technique:

The stamped images used on the butterflies here come from the Ranunculus Romance Stamp Set. For the specks, I used the Irresistible Blooms Stamp Set. Some Irridescent Rhinestones and ribbon were added for some finishing touches.

The second version of my card is one of the cards I made in my Facebook Live video. The method is exactly the same, I just changed up the colors and embellishments.

I really love how these images look on the butterflies!

Incidentally, the color scheme of the card on the right was inspired by my daughter who loves pink and orange. I added a touch of yellow too. It’s not exactly a typical color scheme for butterflies but I still love how it turned out!

Check out the Brilliant Wings Dies and Ranunculus Romance Stamp Set below. I think that both of these products are must-have items. I love them both! You can purchase them in my online store. Hopefully, they are not retiring! We’ll know more on 3/29/23 when the Last Chance List comes out for the retiring 2022 – 2023 Annual Catalog! Stay tuned.
Newsflash!
The Brilliant Wings Dies and Ranunculus Romance Stamp Set used to make these projects WILL BE RETIRING! Get them now before they’re gone!
The Brilliant Wings Dies will be sold at a 60% discount starting on April 4, 2023, IF they are still available at that time!
Now I love these two cards but if you know me at all, you know I love to “go deep” when I play with techniques!
I just had to keep playing, so there’s more!

There’s a new Online Exclusive product that I absolutely LOVE and I just knew it would work beautifully with this die cut masking technique!
Have you checked out the Naturally Gilded Specialty Designer Paper?
This designer paper has silver, gold, and copper embossed elements on it. When I first saw this paper I knew it would be an absolute favorite! I bought two packs of it right off the bat and I can’t stop playing with it!
For my first card, I used a piece with copper elements. I absolutely LOVE the delicate copper foliage images!

Since the copper elements are embossed they resist the ink which makes the butterflies look like they are behind the copper foliage. Pretty cool right?

For this card, I’ve also used some of the gorgeous gold specialty paper along the spine and some small die-cut butterflies. There are also a few Champagne Rhinestone jewels on this one. So rich and pretty!

The second version of my card is the second card I made in my Facebook Live video. The method is exactly the same, I just changed up the colors a bit and used a piece of the gold embossed Naturally Gilded Specialty Paper instead.

The gold embossed shapes on this paper are bit bigger than the copper images on the last card. For these butterflies I went will darker butterflies which seemed to fit better with the gold shapes.

Check out these two cards side-by-side here:
There are subtle but noticeable differences when you see them side-by-side. So elegant!

Last but not least, I needed to make a version of this card with the silver embossed images!
When I think of butterflies my mind immediately goes to blue/purple OR yellow/orange/black or orange/brown. I wanted warm ink colors to go with the copper and gold embossed designer paper which is why I chose the brown tones for the two previous cards.
For this next card, I chose blues for cool tone colors to go with the silver embossed shapes. I simply love these blues with the silver embossed paper!

I’ve used three small die-cut butterflies for an added touch of bling and interest here. These little butterflies are made with the gorgeous 2022 – 2024 InColor Glimmer paper.

For the inside on this one, I use a tiny strip of watercolor paper left over from a previous project. The colors worked perfectly and it adds a little extra touch of color to the inside. Simple but effective!

Here are my three cards made with the Naturally Gilded Specialty Designer Paper:

Can you believe I made all five of these gorgeous cards with a simple mask like the one shown here?
You must try the die cut masking technique!
