Heat Embossing with Tear and Tape

Check out this fun project featuring Heat Embossing with Tear and Tape plus masking. I’m showcasing the Flourishing Phrases Stamp Set which retires on June 2nd, 2020 by using it on this project and sharing several past creations.

This method of heat embossing with tear and tape is not a new thing but often I forget cool fun techniques like this, and it’s just so fun to bring them back. At this time of year, I love to take a walk down memory lane by using and sharing projects made with retiring items. The Flourishing Phrases Stamp Set is most definitely one of my favorite items that is retiring from the 2019 – 2020 Annual Stampin’ Up! catalog. Both of my project variations feature this stamp set.

I’ve also used the Ornate Thanks stamp set for the sentiment, which is an early release item form the new 2020 – 2021 Annual Catalog that goes live on June 3rd, 2020.

This first project is the version I create in my recent Facebook Live. I used masking in two ways.

To create the solid band for the center section I used masking tape that was 1-3/8″ wide. Plus, when I stamped the foliage I put a mask over the stamped flower shapes so the leaves would look like they were in behind the flowers. You’ll find my Facebook Live video toward the end of this post if you’d like to watch me create this card.

Now I added one element to my design after the live event.

If you watch you’ll see that my paper tore just a bit on the left side and when I was fixing it I also got a little ink on the same spot. It looked a bit messy to me so I decided to sponge around the edges of the whole focal piece to cover my mistake. I think the sponging is a nice addition so I can officially call this element a “happy accident”. I did have to take my card apart to do this added step, but I think it was worth the effort to fix my boo-boo.

Now in the Live event, I asked people’s opinions on one element. The question was, should I color in the open spots in the sentiment or leave them white. Everyone who commented said I should NOT color it in so as you can see I left the sentiment as is.

On the second project, which I created before I went live, I had already colored in the sentiment as you can see below.

I used a Dark Mossy Meadow Blends alcohol marker for my coloring on this sentiment. It looks ok but I actually think I prefer the open letters which show the fun detail in this “Thank You” stamp so much better.

For my floral images, I’ve stamped with Memento Black ink and colored in with my Light and Dark Blends Alcohol Markers in Blackberry Bliss and Mossy Meadow.

Now the technique used on these cards is Heat Embossing with Tear and Tape.

It’s so easy to do!

  • I simply placed some 1/8″ wide Tear and Tape along the two lines where my images stopped. (I used masking tape in the center so the images would only be on the edges.)
  • The “Thank You” sentiment was stamped in the center using Versamark.
  • The Tear and Tape was trimmed to get a straight edge on the ends and then the backing was removed to reveal the adhesive.
  • Gold embossing powder was added and then melted with a heat tool.

Some petal pink rhinestone gems were added to flank the sentiment. I just love these little gems! These are retiring by the way! Here’s a close up so you can see and appreciate some of the details.

The Flourishing Phrases Stamp Set has a ton of awesome sentiments and images! I’m going to miss this gem of a set!

Just so you know, retiring stamp sets are guaranteed to be available through May 22, 2020. Everything else that’s retiring is only available while supplies last! Don’t delay getting the retiring items you love so you don’t miss out!!!

So in my video I shared some of my favorite projects made with the Flourishing Phrases Stamp Set.

I decided that I just had to share them here as well! So this first one is made with the rock n’ roll technique.

This next one has a watercolored element that’s heat embossed with white embossing powder. Check out this split image! Fun right?

This is a simple spring themed card with some retired colors. I used both the “Thank You” sentiment stamp from this set on a countless number of cards. I love the fonts.

The card on the left uses both images and dies from the Flourishing Phrases Stamp Set and dies. The strip along the left side of this card was actually a scrap from the card on the right. The card on the right really has nothing to do with the Flourishing Phrases set except that it coordinates so well with the other card shown here. :-)

Both of the backgrounds on these cards were watercolored and the die-cut piece from the one on the left was used on the card on the right! I love using both the negative and positive pieces when die-cutting when possible.

This next card was made by coloring glimmer paper using gel medium and ink refills. It’s my all-time favorite way to color glimmer paper. It takes a little more effort than some other methods but there are several benefits.

Check out this fun project featuring Heat Embossing with Tear and Tape plus masking. I'm also showcasing the retiring Flourishing Phrases Stamp Set.

With this method, you can get richer color, apply color exactly where you want it, it’s totally permanent, and the color will never rub off once it’s dry! Check out my YouTube video that features my favorite way to custom color glimmer paper by clicking HERE.

Last but not least here’s a trio of cards that I created to show a simple, stepped up, and even more stepped up card variations. I also love that this flower can look like a poinsettia, and be transformed into a Christmas card!
