Today’s project was made using a card sketch that is the theme for my monthly team idea challenge.
Treehouse Chicks Team members who want to play along simply create a card(s) that fits the theme and they share photos of their project ideas on our team Facebook group. For each project shared they get a “Chicks Buck” from me which they can accumulate and redeem for Stampin’ Up! products from me. (There are other ways to earn “bucks” too!) It’s always so fun to see what people create. It’s like a virtual swap and we all benefit.
I think it’s so simple to design using a card sketch however, I know this is not the case for everyone. So, I wanted to share how I use a sketch to design. I hope that today’s cards will make it a little bit easier for you to create using a card sketch!
Here’s a peek at the sketch for this month’s challenge:

To get started, I first chose images that would fit into the central shape in the sketch.
After picking the images I decided on a color scheme and then started stamping elements. After the focal piece was created I started playing with which of the colors to use for the card body and the other layers/pieces.

When using a sketch keep in mind that the shapes and images are guides only. As an example, a flower is shown in the sketch but I did not use a flower. The flower is really just a placeholder to say, “put something here”.
On my card, I chose to use a pair of planters. In addition, the sentiment is shown above the flower on the sketch. I used a sentiment but I placed it in a spot that looked more aesthetically pleasing to me which was not above the images but on top of them.

As another example, on the card sketch the two strips with angled ends are toward the top of the focal piece. On my focal piece, I placed them more toward the middle.
In this next photo check out the dry embossed element at the top of the Lost Lagoon strip. That fun wavy shape was created using one of the dies in the Earthen Textures dies. I love this bit of added texture!

This same textural element was used on the bottom right-hand corner of the white panel and on the small planter as well. For this planter, I first dry embossed and then stamped over the top with Pretty Peacock cardstock. Check it out in the close-up photo here.

For this first card, I pretty much stuck to the shapes and sizes in the sketch. On my second card, I resized and repositioned some elements a bit. Scroll down to see my second card.
This project features the Earthen Textures suite of products which is one of my favorite new bundles in the 2023 – 2024 Annual Catalog!
Here’s a peek at the Earthen Textures Bundle:

This next card is also made using the card sketch shown above!
I’ve tweaked the size and position of some of the elements to accommodate the smaller focal piece.

This focal piece is made using watercolor paper and the Rock n’ Roll technique. The pink gems come from the Tinsel Gems Four Pack.

I’ve used the Inked & Tiled Stamp Set and the Inked Botanicals Designer Series Paper for this card. This one was so easy to make and design!

I hope you’ve enjoyed learning a bit about how I used my team challenge card sketch to create these two cards!
