How to Make 5 Handmade Cards with Sweet Ice Cream

In today’s post, you’ll see 5 handmade cards made with the Sweet Ice Cream bundle. These are sneak peeks of the April 2021 Simple Suite Stampers Tutorial Bundle.

Each month the Simple Suite Stampers design team publishes a 12 project tutorial bundle focusing on a particular theme. This month we’re featuring the fun and festive Sweet Ice Cream product suite from the mini catalog. On the first Thursday of the month, my episode of “Treehouse TV” (my Facebook Live video) features a few of the projects in the bundle to give you a sneak peek of some of what’s included. Today I’ll be sharing the 5 handmade cards made in this episode plus an adorable mini-card that I threw in at the end.

This first fun and simple card was Patti Dolan’s project for this month’s tutorial bundle.

Patti also had a sentiment on the front but I decided to just keep it simple so I didn’t include that element.

Here are a few details about this project:

  • I’ve used some of the Ice Cream Corner designer paper for the edges and to punch out the cones which are sponged them with Cinnamon Cider ink along the edges. This gives them just a bit of dimension.
  • The ice cream scoops are punched from Rainbow Glimmer Paper and attached with Dimensionals.

After I made this card I decided it would be really easy to reorient this card for a new twist on the design!

For my green ice cream scoop I used mini dimensionals along the bottom and glue dots at the top, as shown in the photo below.

For all the other scoops, I used mini glue dots at the top of each scoop but on the bottom I doubled up on the mini glue dots to give them a bit more height but not as much as I would have gotten with dimensionals. I found that my scoops had just the right amount of dimension doing it this way.

The small Happy Birthday sentiment comes from the Blossoms in Bloom Stamp Set.

These were super simple, quick cards to make! The designer papers do all the work!

This next project was my contribution to the April Simple Suite Stampers Tutorial Bundle.

I ended up making three variations of this card! Here’s the first and original one.

How to Make 5 Handmade Cards with Sweet Ice Cream

I stamped all my images using the color scheme for this month which was Blackberry Bliss, Bermuda Bay, Old Olive and Cinnamon Cider. The Blackberry Bliss ice cream scoop is popped up on dimensionals and painted with the Clear Wink of Stella brush.

I then added some of the sprinkles from the suite using some multipurpose glue. There are blue and lavender sprinkles in the pack but I had to create my own green sprinkle using my Old Olive Blends Alcohol Marker. I wanted one of each color to coordinate with the ice cream scoop colors.

For my next card I used all the same colors but they’re all stamped off.

This simply means I stamped the first layer of ink on my scrap paper and the second layer of ink on my piece of cardstock. By doing this I was able to get lighter tones of all my colors and generally speaking a softer look to my card.

To get my spacing of the images the way I wanted them, I started by stamping all my scoops first in the various colors, leaving room for the cones underneath.

Next, I masked each scoop and stamped the cone underneath. The masking makes the scoop look like it’s on top of the cone.

After all the base stamping was done I stamped all the hash marks on the cones and all the sprinkles images on the scoops in the same colors as the base layer. The sprinkles were stamped in full ink to make them stand out but for the hash marks I used second inking for a subtler look, except for the cone that is the focal element.

The sentiment piece is attached to it’s backing and then flat onto the card (no dimensionals).

Which of these first two cards do you prefer, the full ink or the stamped off version? Comment below and let me know!

For the last of my 5 handmade cards I found yet another way to soften the colors of the stamped images by using Vellum cardstock.

For this card, I used Bermuda Bay cardstock for the card base which brightens up the look of the card considerably.

A few important details about this card:

  • To put this card together I started by placing my Vellum cardstock piece over the stamped background in the position where I intended to attach it.
  • Then I attached my stamped, punched cone piece to superimpose it over the stamped cone underneath.
  • Next, I attached my stamped, punched scoop piece with Dimensionals, again superimposing it over the stamped scoop underneath. The other ice cream scoops were then attached as well.
  • Lastly, I assembled and attached the sentiment piece.

Tip: All these steps were done BEFORE attaching the Vellum to the card!

Typically, most adhesives will show through on Vellum so I used the process above so that I could put adhesive on the backside of the vellum ONLY in the places where the attached elements were placed.

Last but not least, I used Wink of Stella on all my scoops and cone here!

I love that this version gives me a different look with these simple, quick changes!

Now there is just one more little project! I just had to share this because it uses two of my favorite images in the Sweet Ice Cream set!

Do you see the images in the bottom left and right of the photo above? These two stamps are used to make little popsicles and they’re so adorable!

For the 3″ x 3″ gift enclosure card below, I’ve used Granny Apple Green and Daffodil Delight ink. For the images stamped on the bottom I used full ink and for the images stamped on the top I used second ink, giving these popsicles a two-tone look. I just think they are so cute!

For my project, just one color was used for each popsicle but you can mix it up and use two coordinating colors also. Check out these cute additional options below.
