How to Make an Easel Card with a Resist

Today’s post and video are all about how to make an Easel Card using some fun wax paper resist backgrounds.

I love to play with variations of a given technique to experiment and see what fun effects are possible. At the end of the play session, I often get left with a bunch of pieces that I just don’t have time to use quite yet. These get put in a baggie for future use and I call them “card salad”. For today’s projects, I pulled out this “card salad” baggie to use while showing how to make an Easel Card. They were perfect for what I had in mind!

The first background piece I pulled had already been stamped with some butterfly images from the Floating & Fluttering Bundle. This bundle is retiring this month so it was the perfect opportunity to show it off one more time. During my Facebook Live video, there was one other background I just had to play with so in this post, you’ll also see a second card in a completely different color scheme made with the new Daisy Garden Stamp Set. This first card is the one I made Live on Facebook. You’ll find the video at the end of this post.

For the Wax Paper Resist background on this one, the simplest method was used to create the background.

Here’s the basic process in case you want to play with it:

  1. Crumple up a piece of wax paper into a ball and then open up the wax paper so that it flat.
  2. Sandwich the wax paper between two pieces of cardstock.
  3. Lay the sandwiched pieces onto a heat-safe surface, cover it with a piece of plain copy paper, and iron over the surface on a medium-hot setting (not one of the steam options).
  4. Removed the wax paper and apply ink to the surfaces that were in contact with the wax paper to reveal the shapes created.

For this second card, my Wax Paper Resist background was created using an embossing folder.

So, instead of crumpling up my wax paper, instead, the wax paper was simply dry embossed with the Ornate Floral embossing folder and then I proceeded to step 2 as described above.

The truth is that for the finished card here, the shapes created by the ornate floral embossing folder did not show up very well. In this case, I probably didn’t iron it enough so there was not enough heat to transfer the wax onto the paper. The shapes created are still fun though.

I’ve also used some Wink of Stella on some of the butterflies on this one as well.

The shapes on the second background piece shown in the photo below reflected the shapes in the embossing folder much more closely. The Gorgeous Grape panel at the bottom of the card is dry embossed with that same embossing folder.

Here’s a close up of this dry embossed bottom panel.

A few details about this panel:

  • I’ve used one of my favorite die pieces from the set of Fluttering Dies for the butterflies. I love that this die both cuts and dry embosses at the same time.
  • The sentiments is heat embossed with white embossing powder using a sentiment from the Queen Anne’s Lace Stamp Set. It’s raised up on dimensionals.
  • The gorgeous ribbon is the new Highland Heather Grosgrain ribbon. I love how it shimmers!
  • The black layer in behind the dry embossed piece is raised up on a foam adhesive sheet to serve as a bumper for the front of the card. This is what allows the card to stand up like an easel.

My color was applied to my Wax Paper Resist backgrounds using Blending Brushes and the following colors: Misty Moonlight, Gorgeous Grape and Highland Heather.

Creating the easel fold is actually quite simple!

You’ll start with a piece of cardstock that measures 4-1/4″ x 11″ and score it at 2-3/4″ and 5-1/2″. You’ll fold on both of these score lines n the same direction, to create two “Valley” folds. Watch the video at the end of this post to see how these are assembled. Click HERE to jump to the exact spot where I start showing how to assemble the easel element. Make sure to watch the whole thing because I folded it wrong at first. 🙂

You might also like to know that the Fluttering Dies are on sale for 50% off!

If you love the Floating & Fluttering Stamp Set and Fluttering Dies make sure to purchase them before they’re gone! Plus, while the bundle is still available, you will NOT want to buy them as a bundle which would give you 10% off. Since the dies are on sale for 50% off you’ll save more if you buy them as separate items!

In the video below I just had to show and stamp on the background you see on the finished card here.

I just had the feeling this background would work beautifully with the new Daisy Garden Stamp. This background was also created using the Wax Paper Resist Technique. In this case I folded up my wax paper into a triangle and then kept folding to create the sunburst pattern you see here. So then of course, I was compelled to make a card with this background and I love how it turned out!

Here are a few closeups of the starburst with the daisies.

In this next photo you might be able to see that I also used Wink of Stella on the flowers. It shows up so much better in person and it’s so pretty!

For my bottom “kickstand” piece I dry embossed my Curshed Curry layer with the Ornate Floral embossing folder just like on the first cards.

The butterfly was die-cut from a piece of watercolor paper and colored using a Water Painter with Daffodil Delight and Pumpkin Pie ink. It was attached to a black die-cut butterfly to give it a frame of sorts.

For the antennae I folded and twisted a piece of the gold Simply Elegant trim. Then I frayed the ends and attached the whole piece to the back of my butterfly with a glue dot underneath and then on top.

Next, I rolled up some glue dots to surround the trim so that it would be raised up to the height of the trim when attached to the card.

For the sentiment piece, I used my Versamark, and Heat & Stick Powder with my Gilded Leafing using a sentiment from the Elegantly Said Stamp Set. This was a leftover piece from an earlier creative session that I had on hand.
