Learn How to Get Color Inspiration from Designer Paper!

Do you ever struggle with finding color combinations you love? If so you are going to love today’s post for finding color inspiration ideas!

Each month I have an Idea Sharing Challenge in my Treehouse Chicks Team Facebook Group. Team members earn Chicks Bucks for sharing project ideas that they can redeem for product credits from me! The idea-sharing challenge this month is focused on color inspiration, specifically projects inspired by color combinations from designer series papers.

I love to use designer papers to help find color combinations! Simply look through your designer papers to find a color combination you like. You DON’T EVEN have to like the pattern or design of the paper! You just need to like the way the colors look together!

The color inspiration for today’s project comes from the “Enjoy The Journey Designer Series Paper pack.

Here’s sneak peek of this designer paper:

This paper has 8 gorgeous Stampin’ Up! colors in it.

I chose to incorporate 5 of the 8 colors in my project. Here are the colors I used:

While the Enjoy the Journey designer paper is all about mountains, landscapes and more, my card has nothing to do with those themes.

I ONLY used this paper for my color inspiration and NOTHING else!

Today’s project features the Petal Park Bundle and the Adorable Owls Stamp Set.

I started by stamping my Owl image in Memento Tuxedo Black ink. A Coastal Cabana Stampin’ Write Marker was used to color in the eyes and Pumpkin Pie light and dark Blends Alcohol Markers were used for the beak and feet. Then Crumb Cake light and dark Blends Alcohol Markers were used for the body and head. Isn’t this own just so adorable?! It’s my favorite image in the FREE Adorable Owls Sale-A-Bration stamp set!

You can get the Adorable Owls set for Free with a $50 merchandise order until February 28, 2023!

The Stylish Shapes Dies were used to die-cut the colored owl piece. This piece is attached to the card with Dimensionals.

Next, I started playing with stamping and punching out the flower images from the Petal Park Stamp Set!

I played with four combinations of 1st and 2nd ink, in the pinks and in the oranges so I’d have a bunch of pieces to play with.

Using the Petal Park Builder Punch made it so quick and easy to punch out all these pretty flowers! I LOVE punches!

Here’s my little cluster of flowers at the bottom of my card. I’ve used the Pastel Adhesive-Backed sequins for the centers of my flowers. This set of embellishments includes three colors in two sizes. They worked perfectly for my flowers. I used the large sequins on the large flowers and the small ones on the small flowers.

The black die-cut background piece is made with the Split Card Textures dies.

There are two dies in the set and I really like them both! The black piece adds a simple, yet interesting and dramatic backdrop to the colored flowers and stamped owl in the foreground.

For the inside of this card I stamped with Polished Pink in first and second ink, and then I used some of my punched flowers in the various combinations for the oranges over the top.

For the second version of my card there are just few differences.

This is the card I created during my Facebook Live video.

For my clusters of flowers I felt the need to use an odd number which is simply more pleasing to me. So on my first card I used 3 flowers each at the top and bottom. On this version, I used 5 in each spot. It’s a lot but I still think it works just fine.

You may notice that I’ve embellished my flowers with Iridescent Pearls instead of sequins. These come in two sizes, just like the sequins, and they are so pretty! The sentiment has a scalloped ends which was created using the Happy Labels Pick A Punch.

I’ve also used the second of the two dies in the Split Card Textures dies for the background. I intentionally left some of the piece in some of the openings for a bit of interest to the background.

For the inside on this version, I simply stamped flowers in two of the corners in Polished Pink.

Since the focus of this project and post is color inspiration I want to review just a bit about the colors I chose, their placement, and how it all ties together.

I’ve created a graphic below to review what I call “Building Blocks of Design”. This graphic shows the key decision points and why I chose what I chose. Your choices might have been different as we each have our own style and sense of design.

For what it’s worth, I hope you enjoy seeing my take on the “Building Blocks of this Design”.
