May 2020 Color Challenge and Blog Hop

May 2020 Color Challenge

Welcome to the Color Fusers Blog Hop and May 2020 Color Challenge!

The color scheme for the May 2020 Color Challenge and Blog Hop includes two of the five 2018 – 2020 InColors that are retiring next month. They’re both very bright, cheerful colors and yet I’ve hardly used them, and now have to say goodbye. I’m excited to share two very unique projects today that use these two colors, Pineapple Punch and Call Me Clover, plus Night of Navy too! In fact, several of the products I’m using today are retiring!

This first project was made with card stock scraps that were left over from past projects.

The steps to making this background are very simple!

All you need are your card stock strips, an adhesive like Multipurpose Liquid Glue, and a base piece of cardstock. You can use any size for the base piece and whatever width of strips that you desire. You just want your strips to be long enough so they’ll hang off the edges of your base piece.

  • Start by putting down one strip, at an angle that runs the full length of your base piece of cardstock with the ends hanging off the edges. I like this first piece to end in the upper right-hand corner of the base piece.
  • Continue adding strips that are parallel to this one until you’ve covered the bottom right corner with strips.
  • At this point, I like to use my cutter to trim one of the sides. It makes it a little easier later and then you’re piece isn’t so big and unruly when all your strip are attached.
  • Then you’ll start adding strips that run perpendicular to your first strip until the remainder of the base piece is covered.
  • Last but not least, just trim off the strips hanging off the edge of the base piece using scissors or your cutter. I like to use my cutter as it gives me more precise cuts.

I have a ton of scraps just like this in various thicknesses.

What you see below is a tool caddy that I use specifically to store scraps from projects where I have multiple strips in the same colors. There is a wide range of widths and lengths, but many of the strips are less than ½” wide which is perfect for making a card like I’m sharing today.

I’ve made several of these fun backgrounds with various widths of strips and color combinations. I’ll be sharing those soon!

So, as you may have guessed, I simply die-cut my “Thank You” piece from the hidden part of the background.

Now, I had to run this through my die-cutting machine multiple times since it had to cut through two layers of card stock. What you see in the photo below is the backside of my background piece. The bottom portion is not completely cut yet as you may be able to tell.

I also changed where I placed this piece on the magnetic platform each time I ran it through my die-cutting machine including turning it face down like this. The cutting pressure can be more or less in different spots of a die-cutting machine, so I thought that would help to make sure my die cut through both of the two layers and I’d get a clean cut.

I also cut an extra “Thank You” piece to place in behind my colored “Thank You” element just to give it a little extra height. I attached the pieces you see here together with multipurpose liquid glue.

Shown here are all the card stock pieces used on this card. The Night of Navy and Whisper White layers were die cut using the rectangle stitched dies. This was so fun to play with and I love that there was so little cutting!

Now you should also know that the “Thank You” die shown here is retiring. I love this simple die and I’m going to miss it a lot!

This next card was made with the retiring Daisy Delight Stamp Set.

In these last weeks before the 2019 – 2020 Annual Catalog retires, I’m on a mission to play with and share projects made with retiring items. It’s my way of saying goodbye to some of my favorites while making sure customers are aware that these items will soon be gone!

For this project, I’ve used a number of fun techniques.

I’ve masked, used heat embossed Tear and Tape, plus I’ve colored my rhinestone gems with a blends alcohol marker.

The Tear and Tape is ⅛” wide and I used a Night of Navy Dark Blends Alcohol marker on the rhinestones. The masking was done with 1-3/8″ wide masking tape, to create the center section for my sentiment.

Here’s one final photo of my pair of cards.

I just love how they both turned out!
