May 2021 Color Challenge

Welcome to the Color Fusers Blog Hop and May 2021 Color Challenge!

The color scheme for the May 2021 Color Challenge is Poppy Parade, Flirty Flamingo, Pool Party, and Bumblebee. For me, this was a bit of a strange color combination. The truth is, it got me thinking outside the box as I tried to figure out what to do. My creative play lead me to make the textured background and die-cut shapes, seen in my cards today. I’ll tell you all the details later in this post.

Now, this first card came together pretty quickly. My white piece is dry embossed with the Tasteful Textile embossing folder and I’ve tied a piece of Pool Party ribbon around the bottom. This whole piece was attached with Dimensionals to my Pool Party card body with a Flirty Flamingo panel down the center. The most interesting thing about this card is of course the textured die-cut butterflies.

So let’s talk about how I created my textured background and die-cut butterflies.

I wanted to make a background with my blending brushes but I wanted some texture so I had this crazy idea to use glue to create a resist. Here’s what I did:

  • I grabbed a sponge, put some watered-down multipurpose liquid on it, and dabbed it all over a piece of white cardstock. I then allowed it to dry.
  • Next, blending brushes were used to apply my colors in rainbow order.
  • The glue essentially resisted the ink, leaving those spots white. After my ink was applied I used my adhesive eraser to remove the glue which was kind of a pain but the resulting textured background was pretty cool looking!

I used the piece created with this method to die-cut two of the three butterflies shown on this first card. Here’s a close up of the biggest butterfly so you can really see the fun texture created by my “glue resist” method.

So, for my third butterfly, I decided I needed to create another background piece. I decided to use what I thought would be an easier method to get a similar result.

So for my third butterfly and for the background on my second card here’s the process I used to create my textured background:

  • Using a crumpled-up piece of plastic wrap, I dabbed it onto my Versamark ink pad and pressed the plastic wrap onto my white piece of cardstock. I repeated this process maybe 3-4 times to get bits of Versamark all over my cardstock.
  • I then poured clear embossing powder over my cardstock and heat embossed.
  • Blending Brushes were used to apply color all over the cardstock and just like with the glue, the areas that were heat embossed resisted the ink, leaving behind an interesting texture.

The butterfly in the photo below was created with a background piece using the process just described.

On this piece, unlike on the other butterflies, you can see some shiny areas. In these places, you’re seeing the heat embossed spots that resisted the ink.

For my second card, the background piece was created using the heat embossing method just described.

Now once the background is created the rest of this card is pretty simple to make. I’ve die-cut my butterflies using the Brilliant Wings dies with one each in white and one each in Bumblebee, Poppy Parade, and Pool Party.

Each colored butterfly was attached to its respective white counterpart using glue dots on the central body portions only. These were then attached to my Vellum Cardstock piece. I then put glue dots in behind my butterflies and attached the Vellum to my colored background. Then these layers were attached to a white piece and the Pool Party card base.
