Stampin’ Up! Waves of the Ocean Projects

In today’s post you’ll learn how to make two gorgeous cards with the Stampin’ Up! Waves of the Ocean Collection of products.

I’ll be using a variety of techniques to create today’s cards in two different color schemes. The Stampin’ Up! Waves of the Ocean designer series paper includes a wonderful color palette with Calypso Coral, Petal Pink, Daffodil Delight, Granny Apple Green, Coastal Cabana, Pacific Point, and Night of Navy. I love using Stampin’ Up! designer papers to identify color schemes for my projects!

My first card features three of the seven colors, Calypso Coral, Petal Pink, Daffodil Delight. I’ve also used some Pumpkin Pie to create my scene.

Now this card was inspired by a project created by Tina Wardell. I loved her card and just had to put my own spin on it by bringing in some of the Waves of the Ocean designer paper plus I changed up the colors in the scene just a bit.

Now the scene you see above was created with Daffodil Delight, Pacific Point, and Pumpkin Pie on a white die-cut circle.

For the version made in my Facebook Live video, I used Calypso Coral instead, since it is one of the colors in the designer paper. Later in this post, you’ll see the two cards side by side.

WithOUT the woodgrain circle in behind, I first stamped my pelican with Memento Tuxedo Black ink and masked it with the fussy-cut mask you see in this photo below.

Then I did my sponging of the sky with a little of all three colors. I masked the sun while applying these colors as well with a ¾” circle. After applying my background colors I removed the circle mask and added a little yellow to the sun. Truth be told, I didn’t think to take photos while I was creating so I’m just showing the parts and piece used here. The Pelican was colored in with a Smoky Slate Stampin’ Blends Marker and the wood pilings were colored in with a Soft Suede Stampin’ Blends Marker (hidden behind the sticky note here).

The circle behind my focal piece was die-cut from a piece of the Heart & Home designer series paper and colored with the SU300 Stampin’ Blends Marker.

There are actually 10 of these natural ton Stampin’ Blends Markers. I own the 8 that are shown here. These markers are awesome for all kinds of things with skin tones and wood tones being to two I’ve seen the most. Check out these 8 natural tone shades here.

The SU300 is actually one of the darker tones and is shown on the lower-left corner of my designer paper scrap.

I actually used more than one of these Blends Marker tones on the original version of my card shown below. Can you see that the color of the wood is a little more varied than in the piece above?

For my sentiment element, I used one of the die-cut shapes from the set of Waves Dies and stamped my sentiment on a small strip of Crumb Cake cardstock.

In this post, you'll learn how to make two gorgeous cards with the Stampin' Up! Waves of the Ocean Collection of products.

I wrapped the linen thread around three of my fingers two times, pinched it in the middle, and attached it to the back of the die-cut piece. Then I added Dimensionals to surround, hold in place, and adjust how the thread would show up on the front side. Here’s a look at the backside:

As mentioned earlier, the sentiment backing piece was die-cut using the amazing Wave Dies.

This first photo shows how the biggest two dies in the set work together.

Here are all the other awesome pieces included in this set of dies:

I love how each cloud has an element that can overlay the clouds for a bit of a “silver lining”, plus I love the seagulls and other super useful elements too!

For a few finishing touches on my card…

Eight black Classic Matte Dots were placed around the stamped focal element to give the wood the look of a porthole. This whole element was attached to the card front with Dimensionals.

Here’s a look at my two versions side by side with the different ink colors in the sky.

In this close-up, the card on the right looks like there is some green added when there is not. When the yellow and blue ink mixed when applying the colors I got a touch of green. I really like it so to me it’s a bit of a “happy accident”.

My second card features four colors.

I’ve used three of the seven colors included in the DSP including Night of Navy, Pacific Point, and Daffodil Delight. A bit of Pumpkin Pie ink was used for the horizon.

Check out the gorgeous piece of the Waves of the Ocean designer paper (dsp) in behind my focal piece!

Aren’t the rich blues and bright whites in this DSP stunning? I did play with a fun alternative option in place of this DSP piece which I’ll share later in this post.

For my sentiment I stamped the whole thing on a very thin strip of basic white cardstock and cut it down so I could use part of it on the top and the other part at the bottom. Here are a few closeups:

Now if you watched my Facebook Live video, you know that I played around with whether to use the Pebbles Enamel Shapes or not. In the end, I settled on what you see here and I LOVE it!

In this post, you'll learn how to make two gorgeous cards with the Stampin' Up! Waves of the Ocean Collection of products.

I always struggle with how to use this type of embellishment so I’m especially happy with the result.

In the background you’ll see a half pack of the Pebbles Enamel Shapes. They come in multiple shapes and three different colors including, two shades of gray (used here) and one shade of brown. Since the pelican is colored in shades of gray, these gray embellishments provide a second touch of the same color to tie it all together.

Now if you don’t have the Stampin’ Up! Waves of the Ocean designer paper but you do have the stamp set, here’s a simple option for you!

I used the large wave image from the Waves of Inspiration stamp set and stamped it repeatedly with Pacific Point ink on the same color of cardstock. Isn’t the resulting texture beautiful!?

In this post, you'll learn how to make two gorgeous cards with the Stampin' Up! Waves of the Ocean Collection of products.

Below and on the left you’ll see my card with the DSP and the one on the right shows that panel replaced with my stamped Pacific Point piece.

The background is subtle but it works just fine. To me the version with the DSP is better partly becuase of the lovely bright white touches and variations in the colors but both work.

In this post, you'll learn how to make two gorgeous cards with the Stampin' Up! Waves of the Ocean Collection of products.

Here’s a close up of the stamped panel.

Now in the process of creating I played around with some alternative layering options that are shown below.

What’s your favorite? Would you have picked a different alternative than what I picked?

Here’s a summary of how each of these were different from how I finished my card:

  • A. Stamped Pacfic Point was used instead of DSP and the focal piece is backed with Night of Navy cardstock instead of white.
  • B. Stamped Pacfic Point was used instead of DSP, the focal piece is backed with Night of Navy instead of white and Soft Suede cardstock was used instead of Basic White for the large background layer.
  • C. The Layout I used to Finish My Card
  • D. The focal piece is backed with Pacific Point cardstock instead of Basic White cardstock, and Soft Suede cardstock was used instead of Basic White for the large background layer.
