What to do with paper scraps! A fun, easy method!

Do you ever wonder about what to do with paper scraps from your paper crafting projects? If so, you’re going to love seeing my project today!

I don’t know about you but I have tons of strips of white cardstock scraps. Many of them are from cutting pieces for the insides of my cards that measure either 4″ x 5-¼” or 3-⅞” x 5-⅛”. The scraps from cutting these inside pieces are either½” or ⅝” wide. I hate to waste so I’m always on the lookout for what to do with paper scraps, especially when I have a bunch of the same size.

For today’s club project I’ve used ⅝” strips of white scraps for the stamped pieces and for the sentiment piece as well.

Since this was a club project and I would be cutting for multiple people to make this card I had to check to make sure I’d have enough scrap strips to include in kits. So I needed seven 5/8″ strips for each card and enough for 30 projects! (Most of my club members like to make 2 of each card.) Well, that was no problem which gives you some idea of how many scraps I have! In fact, I cut the kits with lots to spare. I loved being able to make use of these scraps and share a beautiful project in the process.

So to make the stamped pieces here I simply put adhesive on the back of 6 strips, attached them one next to the other on a silicone craft sheet, and stamped all my images. You can also use temporary adhesive to hold the pieces in place on your scrap paper but using the silicone craft sheet just saves a step.

Next, the stamped pieces were attached to a piece of Garden Green cardstock so that the same amount of Green cardstock showed through the gaps, and on the left and right. Getting the spacing can be a bit labor-intensive but it’s quite satisfying when you get it the way you want it. I often start with a piece of Garden Green cardstock that’s a little bigger than needed and then trim it down. My finished piece measures 3-⅞” x 5-⅛” and is attached to the Evening Evergreen card body with Dimensionals after the ribbon is attached.

As you can see here I’ve used three different ribbon colors, Soft Succulent, Real Red. and Evening Evergreen.

All three ribbons are actually cut down the middle to give me pieces that are half their original width. Now for my original card I layered my ribbons one on top of the other, wrapped them around my Garden Green piece, secured the ends with binder clips and then tied my knot. It was a bit challenging to control the ribbon as I tied so I’ll be offering an alternative approach later in this post.

For the second version I made of this card I changed the colors a bit by replacing my Soft Succulent ribbon with a piece of Gold Shimmer Ribbon.

For this version, I used my alternative ribbon tieing method. What you see below is the backside of my Garden Green piece for this second card. So instead of tieing my ribbons all the way around my Garden Green piece, I attached one ribbon at a time with MiniGlue Dots.

After my ribbon pieces were where I wanted them, I secured them all with a piece of Tear & Tape. I did NOT remove the backings of the Tear & Tape as their main purpose was simply to hold the ribbons down.

After securing the three colors of ribbon, I used my leftover ribbon pieces to tie a knot onto the ribbons across the front. It was still a little challenging to hold all three ribbons while tieing but it was easier than wrapping the ribbon around and then tieing a knot. Below you’ll see the knot on the front of this card.

Tip: When you cut some ribbons down the middle you can release some of the threads for some added interest and texture.

Now in the photo below, you’ll see some red strands. I intentionally used my fingernail to pull these threads from the ribbon to provide some added texture. You can do the same thing with the Gold Shimmer ribbon.

To create my sentiment element I simply stamped my sentiment, cut shallow banners on the ends of each piece, and attached them to one another at the top with Glue Dots. I used Dimensionals to straddle the pieces to hold them in the fanned out shape that I wanted. Having them lifted up at the bottom also makes it look like they are hanging in the air. Additional glue dots were added at the top and then the top was tucked under the knot on the front of the card and attached.

I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing my project today and getting an idea of what to do with paper scraps!

Keep in mind, you can use whatever width strip you want. You will need to figure out how many strips you’ll need and adjust the size of your base piece to meet the needs of the width of the scraps you’re using.

In the photo below you’ll see the two versions of my card with the different ribbon combinations I used.

For these cards, the sentiment comes from the Tidings & Trimmings Stamp Set and all the other images come from the NEW Christmas Season stamp set, from the July to December 2021 MiniCatalog. Plus, I’ve used a bunch of greens for my stamping! I do love green!
